Upward Bound
Community Engagement Activity

The Upward Bound Program (UB) at Binghamton University is one of TRIO's college access and preparation programs funded by the United States Department of Education. Upward Bound is an academic program that helps low-income and first-generation students achieve academic success in high school and prepares them for continued success in the college of their choice. UB provides academic, career, financial, and personal advising and resources to program scholars in participating local high schools.

Upward Bound Summer Program
Community Engagement Activity

The Upward Bound Summer Program is a highly structured 6-week academic preparation summer program that focuses on the combination of academic excellence, cultural awareness, and social responsibility necessary for the success of our first-generation and low-income students. The objective is to build positive relationships with Upward Bound staff, instructors, classmates, and other university officials and to enhance the confidence levels and self-determination of incoming students. Our goal is to prepare each student with the tools and resources for them to be successful in an effort to significantly increase the likelihood of persistence to high school and college graduation and completion. Scholars take high school level classes to improve skills in subjects such as Science, English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Foreign Language, and some electives. Scholars also take college preparatory courses and credit bearing college-bridge courses.
The Upward Bound Summer Program also focuses on effective decision making and the development of study skills conducive to academic success. The Upward Bound Summer Program will serve to generate opportunities for students to acquaint themselves with a microcosm of college life as they develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It will encourage students to make a conscious connection between the acquisition of multiple skills and their application to academic, social, and professional environments.

B-College Bound
Community Engagement Activity

The B-College Bound program is a partnership between the Multicultural Resource Center (MCR) and Upward Bound (UB). UB is one of TRIO’s college and access programs funded by the United States Department of Education. Upward Bound at Binghamton University is an academic program that helps over 160 low-income and first generation students from the following high schools: Binghamton, Chenango Forks, Chenango Valley, Deposit, Greene, Harpursville, Johnson City, Sidney, Union-Endicott, Whitney Point, and Windsor each year. UB aims to help qualifying students achieve academic success in high school, and prepares them for continued success in the college of their choice. UB achieves these goals by providing academic, career, financial, and personal advising and resources to program scholars in participating high schools.
The B-College Bound Mentor Program was implemented to expand the services and support provided to Upward Bound students to ensure their success in college attendance and enhance connections between Binghamton University and the local community. Our mentors serve as role models who are currently navigating college successfully and share similar experiences with UB students. Mentors provide academic, social and career support to UB scholars.
Our B-College Bound Program has four main goals:
Ensure UB scholars are successful in college preparation and enrollment.
Provide more undergraduate students with the opportunity to participate in positive high impact learning experiences.
Enhance connections between Binghamton University and the local community.
Help UB students develop cultural capital and promote positive interactions in a college setting.

Ross Park Zoo Wayfinding
Community Engagement Activity

Ross Park Zoo Wayfinding was developed as a key element of Professor Segalini’s Spring 2021 ARTS 310 Graphic Design II course, to address the design needs of a cherished though vulnerable community amenity, in response to a request for assistance from the director of the Ross Park Zoo. In collaboration with Zoo personnel, Professor Segalini and his students and undergraduate TA created proposals for a comprehensive, coherent design program to assist visitors in finding their way around the zoo’s facilities and its many exhibits.
