Eco-Explorers Program
Community Engagement Activity
The Eco Explorers Program aims to promote environmental awareness and stewardship and to enhance scientific literacy in order to empower the citizens of the State of New Jersey. The program’s environmental education activities include virtual classrooms and participation in community events.
This program combines recreational activities, environmental education lessons, computer technology lessons, and guided field trips to notable natural sites and water resource management facilities in the Passaic River basin and Newark Bay. Project staff will lead the tours and present lessons in classrooms and science labs on the campus of Montclair State University. Students will be taught how to use instruments and software used by scientists and other professionals and apply these skills toward exercises relevant to the sites and topics of the tours.
Friends Day 2024
Community Engagement Activity
Montclair State University's Department of Campus Recreation has enjoyed hosting Friends Day for over 10 years. Professional staff, along with many university faculty, ensured the smooth operation of activities for Friends (kids) and Buddies (college students). Each year, the 75,000 sq. ft. Student Recreation Center was transformed into a kid-friendly space, featuring activities across the two gyms, six-lane pool, racquetball courts, and lounges. The Disney-themed Friends Day for this year took place on December 3rd.
Over 100 children participated in exciting activities such as a photo booth, arts & crafts, pool parties, and more. Free two-hour sessions were offered for children and young adults with disabilities (ages 5-21). MSU student volunteers guided their assigned Friends through the event, with training provided beforehand.
Teamwork played a crucial role in the success of Friends Day, and additional volunteers (MSU students only) were always welcome to help organize, create goody bags, or assist with planning.
Food Recovery
Public Service Activity
The Food Recovery Network is the largest student-led movement dedicated to combating food waste and ending hunger in America. Montclair's Chapter was founded in October 2017 by a passionate group of students from the Nutrition and Food Studies Department.
Through the support of our dedicated volunteers' efforts, we strive to reduce food waste and address food insecurity, making a meaningful difference for those we support. We are extremely committed to continuing this important initiative!
