Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive
Community Engagement Activity
UMB's Staff Senate and Office of Community Engagement host a Thanksgiving food drive to benefit families in West Baltimore. The Staff Senate raises money to support this effort to fill Thanksgiving food baskets with food items such as stuffing, cranberries, mashed potatoes, vegetables, and more. K-12 Campus Visits
Community Engagement Activity
Through partnerships with numerous schools within a mile of the UMB campus, the Office of Community Engagement offers campus visits focused on health and fitness, exposing local students to careers for which UMB trains its students and the rich history of the UMB campus. Campus-based destinations in addition to our professional schools include the Westminster Burial Ground, Davidge Hall (the original School of Medicine Building), Pharmacy and Nursing museums, R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, and others.
Vaccine Outreach at UMB's Community Engagement Center
Community Engagement Activity
UMB Community Engagement Center's Community Health Education and Prevention Program participates in regional effort led by the School of Medicine and funded by HRSA to address vaccine hesitancy in West Baltimore. The program employs a team of Community Health Workers that attend events in West Baltimore, answers questions about the vaccine, and refer interested community members to vaccine clinics.
Lord Baltimore Triage, Respite, and Isolation Center
Community Engagement Activity
In early May 2020, the Mayor’s Office and BCHD negotiated a partnership with the Lord Baltimore Hotel and the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) to establish the TRI (Triage Respite Isolation) Center to support residents with known or suspected COVID-19 who do not require hospitalization and are unable to self-isolate. The center opened to residents on May 12 with a public health mission to prevent the spread of disease.

The UMB Office of Community Engagement (OCE) serves as UMB’s community liaison on behalf of the Office of the President. With a strong focus on communities in West Baltimore that border the UMB campus, the OCE develops and nurtures University-wide partnerships with external stakeholders, including K-12 public schools, community organizations, nonprofits, and local businesses.
