Girl Scouts - Women in Construction Patio Build
Community Engagement Activity
This project is the combined efforts of the Chico State Women in Construction (CSWIC) student club wanting to do community service and hands-on experiential learning, along with the Girl Scouts of Northern California - Chico who have the desire to have a patio structure built on their propoerty. The Girl Scouts recently purchased a new lot in Chico to expand their offerings for girls in Northern California. As of now, a new office and "barn" activity center have been built onsite. A grant was received through the Soroptimist International of Chico to help fund a new patio to provide space for more outdoor activities, and a shade structure.
CSWIC was able to define the scope of work that the Girl Scouts wanted, work with local contractors to design, permit, and are now under construction to complete the patio in May 2022. The planning, design and construction allow real world experiences to the female students in the club that they would anticipate seeing after graduation. They also get the opportunity to work along side local contractors, getting hands on experience, and the opportunity to work with the local Girl Scout girls and show them the potential career opportunities that engineering and construction can provide, should they be interested.
So far, it has been an amazing opportunity for the students, and the partnership with the Girl Scouts will hopefully continue for future projects each year to continue to expand their new site offerings.
