Girls In Power Restorative Circle Workshop
Public Service Activity
DePaul student's worked with Girls In Power, enriching restorative circle workshop designed to empower elementary school girls navigating menstruation. Through open dialogue and engaging activities, girls aged 6 to 11, from urban communities and immigrant families, explore their changing bodies and identities in a supportive environment.
This program aligns with key focus areas like Education, Social Issues, and Health and Wellness. It provides access to underrepresented populations, offers after-school programming on literacy and self-esteem, and advocates for child welfare and mental health awareness.
Girls In Power also promotes environmental sustainability by educating girls on pollution prevention. Achieving outputs in continuing education and recreational events, it fosters personal and professional growth, nurturing girls' confidence and resilience for a brighter future.
Elizabeth Ann Seton Food Pantry and Sandwich Window
Community Engagement Activity
Students have the opportunity to volunteer for a morning shift assisting with meal prep and meal distribution at the Elizabeth Ann Seton Food Pantry and Sandwich Window. Located at St. Vincent de Paul Church, the soup kitchen serves an average of 125 meals a day, in addition to hundreds of special holiday meals and thousands of cups of coffee per year.
Creator of Workshops and Mentorship at The Asset-Based Community Development Institute (ABCD)
Public Service Activity
John Zeigler, as the driving force behind the Workshops and Mentorship program at The Asset-Based Community Development Institute (ABCD), plays a pivotal role in expanding ABCD's global influence. Collaborating with institute members, he designs and delivers impactful workshops internationally, including a groundbreaking session based on Chicago residents' insights into public safety.
Under John's leadership, the program achieves diverse outputs, from fostering campus representation to hosting cultural events. Additionally, it realizes institutional outcomes such as promoting academic content, civic knowledge, and lifelong learning skills among students, reflecting John's commitment to holistic community development.
Health & Wellness for People with Disabilities
Community Engagement Activity
Students in the graduate nursing program work with programs across Chicago that provide exercise, health and wellness to individuals with disabilities. Activities include:
- Developing a health and wellness curriculum to support disability jusice at Envision Unlimited.
- Developing at-home kits for KEEN Chicago athletes
- Update and improve session activity guide for online programming
The Story of "The Little School Under the 'L' - Under the 'L'"
Community Engagement Activity
The project, spanning years, features 25 expansive murals wrapping around the pillars of the Fullerton L stop. These 10-foot-by-8-foot artworks pay homage to DePaul University's 125-year history, celebrating key figures and moments. Beginning in 2016, the project culminated in the summer of 2022.
Collaborated with the Sheffield Neighborhood Association, it engaged 100 students, who collectively contributed 2,500 hours through coursework, showcasing the power of community collaboration and academic involvement.
Navigating Staffing Changes During COVID-19 for Caledonia Senior Living & Memory Care

In the MPS533 coursework, DePaul students specializing in Applied Statistics and Public Service played a crucial role in supporting Caledonia Senior Living & Memory Care.
They made significant contributions by utilizing Excel to conduct a comprehensive statistical analysis, specifically focusing on assessing staffing adjustments during the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The investigation sought correlations and trends based on factors such as gender, age, and race, aiming to provide valuable insights into the impacts of these demographics on staffing dynamics in the context of the pandemic.
Ericson Magnet Academy Healing Garden Ribbon Cutting
Community Engagement Activity
DePaul University Egan Office in conjunction with Leif Ericson Elementary school opened the long awaited memorial healing garden. The event was witnessed by the Egan Office representatives who were later joined by Dr. Howard Rosing. During this ceremony, John Zeigler gave some words of wisdom to the students and staff present that they should maintain the garden and foster the spirit of "Ubuntu" to live as truly human to one another and to their community. This project took almost one full year to its completion. It comes as a result of many efforts from Ericson school, some community partners (Annemaria and Pastor Leshona), students from DePaul, and Egan Office. Thanks. Viva DePaul University

- Master level DePaul's counseling students in CSL454 coursework partnered with Cara Collective to design workshops and webinars for impoverished individuals seeking employment.
- Achievements include pro bono consultation, adult education sessions, cultural events, and community website creation.
- Funding was secured through grants, supporting project sustainability.
- Students experienced academic and personal growth, contributing to 250 individuals served for 4,850 hours collectively.
- Scholarly outputs include conference presentations and program evaluations, advancing the counseling field.
